Hal About That?

Hal Haid is another reliever who may not deserve a spot on my list. But since the relief pitchers dates back further in baseball than many realize, I see no reason why not to include him. He did lead the lead the National League in saves in 1928, but obviously, times have changed. Five won't even lead your bullpen in today's day and age.

But Hal makes the list for other reasons. His ERA (2.30) is considerably better than the league average for '28, 3.99. And while he collected just five saves, they were big ones, obviously. The St. Louis Cardinals, his team, were on their way to the World Series that year, just like in 1926. But this time, they were swept by the New York Yankees. Haid was named to the postseason roster, but did not pitch.
