The (Nearly) Constant Reliever, Baumgartner

Stan Baumgartner is another surprise to this list. Why, look at the ERA? However, viewed in proper perspective, it isn't so bad. The American League gave up it share of hits in 1925, even with a rare off-season by Babe Ruth himself, the poor junior circuit saw hurlers post an ERA of 4.39. But this Philadelphia Athletic without some of that.

So Stan's isn't too bad. This was really his only good season out of the bullpen when Baumgartner hopped in more than 20 times. Worse still, he wasn't even the regular closer. That job belonged to Rube Walberg. Of Baumgartner's six wins, only two came as a relief pitcher.

That doesn't detract from the fact that Stan was used out of the bullpen for 22 straight appearances spanning June 15th to September 10th of '25.
