1919 was the year of the Black Sox Scandal. But overshadowing that was a fine year by the New York Giants bullpen ace, Jean Dubuc. Dubuc had once been a starter, but seemed to find his real home coming into games late. He still managed to start five times, and that didn't stop Jean from leading the National League in games finished with 22.
Dubuc had started in the Senior Circuit back in 1908 with the Cincinnati Reds. And amazingly enough, he was used primarly as a reliever. Getting nowhere fast, he was finally a starter for the Detroit Tigers in 1912. He enjoyed five solid seasons there, developing a pitch that was probably a changeup. It got many batters out. Jean twice won 17 games for the Bengals. The only downside was he twice led the league in wild pitches. That changeup (Or whatever it was) was clearly ahead of it's time.
Dubuc spent 1918 with the American League Boston Red Sox and National League New York Giants. He did little for Boston. He did a lot for New York. Putting his great talent to it's capabilities in a new role as the team's closer, Dubuc delivered a lot more than just pitches. All Jean did was win six games, save three more, post an ERA of just 2.66, and rack up innings. Although he only started a handful of games for the Giants, he ended the season with 132 innings pitched. His 31 games in relief led the league.
It also proved to be Jean's last season. There were rumours during the 1920 about the previous World Series being fixed. Proven true, the victims went beyond the beaten Chicago White Sox. Dubuc played with Chick Gandil nine years earlier and was friends with him. He'd also lived with Sleepy Bill Burns, who used to be a major league baseball player himself, but would be implicated in the fix.
Dubuc was never suspended or blacklisted by the newly-appointed commissioner Kenesaw Mountain Landis. He continued to pitch, and with good success, in the minor leagues. His alleged involvement may have lead to Jean Dubuc never returning to the bigs, however.
