Stewart Smoked 'Em In 1983, Part 2

Dave Stewart may have only gotten 8 saves to go along with his impressive 10-4 record in 1983. But he also had 5 holds. His ERA is 2.60 (2.16 for Texas after the trade), excellent.

In many ways, this was a developing time for Dave, who started 9 games that year. He basically was a starter the next year, but went only 7-14. He still wasn't much of a strikeout pitcher, either, as he averaged just 5.2.

Stewart's problems continued in 1985 as Texas dealt him to Philly (Who Dave pitched against in the 1993 World Series). Stewart was 0-6 that year, back in the bullpen (5 starts). Philly dealt him to Oakland the next year after starting 1986 out with an ERA of 6.57 in eight relief appearances.

At this point, Stewart had a bad track record since his excellent 1983 season. His ERA was 4.73 and 5.46 in the seasons since. But with the Athletics, his career took off.

He was 9-5 with a respectable 3.95 ERA the rest of 1986, and then became a great pitcher. He won 20 games the next four seasons in Oakland, pitching clutch in the postseason and always giving his team a lift when they needed it. His days in the bullpen were long gone.
