A torn rotator cuff ended Jeff Lahti's career. So the St. Louis Cardinals turned to Todd Worrell in 1986.
Todd had been with the Cards in 1985, and even pitched in the postseason despite appearing in only 17 games. After going 3-0 with a 2.91 ERA that season, he was promoted to closer in 1986.
Todd won nine games, pitched over 100 innings (103.2) and had the closer job. His 60 games finished topped the National League. And until an injury forced him to miss the entire 1990 season, St. Louis looked no further than Todd for moppin' up!
