Worrell: Taking Over From Lahti In 1986, Part 2

So the St. Louis Cardinals new kid in town in 1986, taking over from Jeff Lahti (Whose career had come to an end because of an arm injury) in the closer role. Lahti hadn't actually been the only pitcher to close games for the Cards in 1985. Ken Daley saved eleven games himself to go along with Jeff Lahti's nineteen (In just twenty save opportunities).

Todd Worrell had five saves (Seven opportunities) in 1985. Was he ready for the closer role the next season? You bet he was.

All Worrell did was save a National League-leading 36 games, post a 2.08 ERA, and win NL Rookie Of The Year. On the downside, Todd did blow 10 saves. Though not overpowering, he did record 73 K's in 103.2 innings pitched.
