Rookie Bressler Earned An A+ In Philly, Part 1

Rube Bressler was a rookie on the Philadelphia Athletics in 1914. And he was going to stay a while, no matter what position he was assigned.

That year, the A's had Bob Shawkey, Chief Bender, Eddie Plank, Weldon Wyckoff, Bullet Joe Bush, and a 20-year old kid named Herb Pennock.

Pennock started fourteen games and relieved that same number. He won eleven games and saved three. Would you believe it, our boy was actually better?

At least out of the bullpen. Rube Bressler won ten games in '14, losing only four. Of his 29 appearances, nineteen came in relief and Rube finished fifteen games. And he was a workhorse in those appearances, pitching 147.2 innings. Six of his wins, however, came as a starter.

Rube was named to Philadelphia's postseason roster, yet didn't pitch in the World Series. And this was not to be Bressler's only pennant-winning team he was on.
