Rookie Bressler Earned An A+ In Philly, Part 2

AS you can probably imagine, Rube Bressler didn't exactly rake in the saves in 1914, as most pitchers on that Philadelphia Athletics' starting rotation went all nine most of the time. The same was true for all the other teams in MLB in that time.

So what do we find? Two saves, okay. However, Bressler fanned 96 batters in 147.2 innings of work. That's 5.9 per 9. Excellent. Rube's WHIP is low, 1.138. But how about the big one? Wins above replacement? Here is where Bressler eared his "A+". His WAR was 3.5 for 1914.

Bressler pitched until 1920, posting a 26-32 record. Then, he made the transition from pitcher to positioned player. Rube was named to the postseason roster while on the Cincinnati Reds in 1919, but did not appear in the World Series.

As a positioned player, Bressler continued on until 1932. His final batting average was a very impressive .301!
