Romo Was One of The Family, Part 2!

So Enrique Romo wasn't the closer on the World Series-winning Pirates in 1979? He was second among Pittsburgh hurlers in appearances (84) and tied the team's closer, Ken Tekulve, for relief wins with ten (Jim Bibby was 12-4 overall that season, but nine of his wins were as a starter). It was Teke who was the only pitcher to appear in more contests than Romo, as Ken took the hill 94 times in '79.

Romo topped his team in holds in 1979 with twelve. Teke got eight himself and Grant Jackson (8-5 with 14 saves) had eleven holds. Enrique's ERA is higher than many on Pittsburgh that year, though.

Tekulve was just 2.75, Bibby's was 2.81, although seventeen of Jim's appearances were as a starter. Jackson's was 2.96 and Romo's 2.99. However, how about comparing our boy's earned run average to those of the starting staff? Bert Blyleven's was 3.60 despite being 12-5. John Candelaria's was 3.22. Bruce Kison's was 3.60. Neither Don Robinson nor Jim Rooker had a good ERA. Robinson's was 3.87 and Rooker's was 4.60. Romo won more games than Robinson and Rooker.

Enrique blew eight saves, so his conversion rate is just .385. Tekulve's, by comparison, was .838 with 31 saves. But Romo fanned 106 batters in 129 1/3 innings pitched. Teke managed just 75 K's in 134.1 innings. Enrique would top all Pirates' relievers in innings and strikeouts in 1979.

Teke lead the bullpen in wins above replacement with a 3.2. Romo's wasn't bad, 1.8. But well back. But Enrique's 7.4 K/9 topped anyone on Pittsburgh. Put in perspective, swingman Jim Bibby was second on the team in K/9 with 6.7. Bibby topped the team in walks and hits per inning, 1.140. Tekulve topped all exclusive relievers with 1.176 and Enrique was .100 points higher, 1.276.

Enrique Romo continued to be an effective bullpen man after 1979. The next year, Romo was only 5-5 for the Bucs, but saved eleven games. He'd saved sixteen as a rookie with Seattle in 1977 and ten more in '78. However, Enrique's win total was just five in '80 against five losses. His ERA went up to 3.27 that year, too. The Pirates did not repeat.

Enrique was only 1-3 in the strike-shortened 1981 season. But he did save another nine games. Teke and Grant Jackson were still there. Plus, the team now had another excellent reliever in Victor Cruz. But the problem was the starting staff wasn't good anymore. Bert Blyleven was gone. Jim Bibby had a 2.50 ERA but just six wins. Rick Rhoden topped the staff with just nine. But while Ken Tekulve finished 27 games, he recorded only three saves. Romo led the team!

The 1982 season was Enrique's last in the bigs. Pittsburgh had been just 46-56 overall in the shortened 1981 season. The next year, the Pirates improved to 84 wins. And it was Romo who was the winning pitcher in nine of them! The team's bullpen was still strong. Romo's ERA was 4.36, but he pitched 86 2/3 innings. But it was Rod Scurry who got the saves Teke didn't. Tekulve finished with 20 that year, Scurry 14. Romo had only one.
