It Runs in the Romo Family, Part 1

Enrique Romo wasn't the only pitching star in his household. Older brother Vicente was no slough himself. His rookie year was on for the books (And my list) of relief pitchers!

Vicente started out in his native Mexican League. Although, his pro debut was with the 1962 Aguascalientes Tigers of the Mexican Central League. Romo was still a teenager. But he was also the only player on the Tigers that would reach the major leagues.

The next two years of Vicente's career were at the "AA" level with the Mexico City Tigers. Romo helped the team go 66-66, then 76-63. After the 1964 season, he was signed by the Cleveland Indians. Romo spent 1965 with the Portland Beavers, but wasn't a factor even though he was now pitching at "AAA" level. He was just 2-5. After returning to Mexico City to pitch for the Tigers in '66, he was right back with Portlant in 1967. Romo's numbers improved, but Vincente was just 3-11.

Having said all that, he was in the major leagues in 1968. But it was not with Cleveland. The Los Angeles Dodgers got him via the rule five draft.  On April 11th, he made a one-inning appearance for the Dodgers. Romo allowed one run, then amazingly, was reacquired by Cleveland on April 26th!

But Vincente proved himself ready for the big-league club. Back in Portland for ten games, he was 4-3, getting eight starts. Called up to Cleveland late in June, Romo was ready.

The 29-year old was put right in the closer spot on the Tribe. Romo did not disappoint. He even got a start. But in his 39 other appearances, Vincente finished 29 of them. He might have pitched more but for the staff ace Luis Tiant. Tiant won 21 games that year and lead the American League in ERA, 1.60. Luis also completed 19 of his 32 starts. Second on the team in earned run average was hard-throwing Sam McDowell. Sam was only 15-14 but posted a 1.84 ERA, completing eleven of his 37 starts.

Having said all that, Romo still finished 1968 with 83.1 innings pitched. His competition in the bullpen was vast. Stan Williams had starred for the Los Angeles Dodgers in the 1950s and early 60s. Then he went to the New York Yankees in 1963. Though only 9-8, his performance improved as the season went on and his ERA dropped from 5.77 on June 6th to just 2.98 on August 29th. Stan had showed Los Angeles he could pitch out of the bullpen in '62 and he finished the year 14-12 (Twelve relief appearances).

After a strong World Series performance (0.00 ERA and 5 K's in 3 IP) against his old team, LA, Stan had showed the Bronx Bombers that he was a handy man. During the regular season, in eight relief outings, his earned run average was just 1.75.

But when Stan stumbled in 1964 (1-5, 3.84 ERA), he became expendable. Before the next season began, Cleveland purchased Willams' contract. He spent the next two years pitching primarly in the minor leagues, but Stan was back in the bigs. In sixteen games with Cleveland, 6-4 with a 2.62 ERA splitting the times as a starter and reliever with eight appearances in each role.

So when 1968 rolled around, Williams wasn't about to head back to the minors. He got into 44 games, 20 of them as a reliever. Stan finished 16 games and posted a record of 13-11. Vincente Romo's W-L record looks a tad pedestrian in comparison as he went just 5-3. But only Eddie Fisher and Mike Paul had more innings pitched among hurlers on the Indians whose roles were primarily in relief. Romo finished with 83.1 innings pitched on Cleveland. Fisher pitched 94.2 and Paul 91.2. But Mike Paul started seven games. Eddie Fisher was second on the club in games finished with 24.
