Nelson Earned An "A-Plus" In 1990!

Gene Nelson was "A relief pitcher not named Dennis Eckersley on the Oakland Athletics in 1990. But that doesn't mean he did help out the A's that year.

Oakland went all the way to the World Series for the third consecutive season in '90, and their bullpen consisted of more than the closer.

Nelson had only mixed success as a starter. In 1985 with the Chicago White Sox, he went 10-10 in 46 games, 18 of which were starts. In 1987 he was on Oakland. He helped them reach their first World Series since 1974 when he went 9-6 out of the 'pen in 1988. Two seasons later, he was only 3-3, but his ERA was 1.57!
