Beene Was a Clean 6-0 in 1973, Part 1

Fred Beene is one of the more forgotten relief pitchers to have come out of the New York Yankees' bullpen. 1973 was the first use of the DH and the last year of the The Bronx Bombers at the original Yankee Stadium (It would be renovated during the next two years, forcing the Yankees to share Shea Stadium with the Mets).

The Yankees also weren't the team they'd use to be. New York had won 29 pennants and 20 World Series' from 1921 to 1964. But their next pennant didn't come until 1976, as the team returned to a renovated Yankee Stadium. Beene was not around The Bronx anymore, or even at the MLB level. Instead, Fred was pitching at AAA Toledo in the Cleveland Indians' organization. He never returned to the bigs.

But while Fred Beene's career might have been unremarkable at the MLB level, his time in New York was pretty good. There might not have been any postseason for him (Fred had previously pitched for the Orioles from 1968 to 1970, but only seven games, total. He was not on Baltimore's postseason roster in 1969 or 1970).

But when he arrived in New York in 1972, Beene appeared to have found a home. He was only 1-3 in 1972, but posted a fine 2.34 ERA in 29 appearances. Only one of them was a start. The following year, Beene only appeared in nineteen games, but four of them were as a starter. He matched his previous year's total of eleven games finished. Fred pitched a career-high 91 innings. Most impressively, Fred finished the year 6-0, including 4-0 as a reliever.
