Poor Donnie Moore, Part 2

Moore's 1985 season is even better when you look at the "Big" stats of relievers. Donnie's ERA for '85 was a career-best 1.92. Okay, he did blow eight saves, but Moore pitched in his first All-Star Game! He got the all-time Hit King himself, Pete Rose, to ground out. Moore retired all six batters he faced in the mid-summer show!

How about some even more evidence of a great year? How about our favourite "new" stat? Wins Above Replacement. Donnie's was 3.6 in 1985, excellent for a reliever. All this led to California's closer to finish sixth in AL MVP voting (Don Mattingly won it, but Donnie Moore had the most votes of any American League pitcher!) and tied Dave Stieb and Bret Burns for seventh in AL CY Young Award votes. Donnie had the second-most votes of any relief pitcher as Dan Quisenberry, who himself finished an impressive third (Tied with Bert Blyleven). Opponents did manage to hit .237 against Donnie, though.
