Jack Was Saving The Phillies In 1963, Part 2

Jack Baldschun's second set of stats sets him apart from the rest of the Philadelphia Phillies' bullpen in 1963. One of the names that jumps out at me when I view the team is Ryne Duren. Ryne had been amazing in 1958-59 for the New York Yankees and probably gave Jack a real run for his money as the top bullpen man on the team in '63.

Duren led the 'pen in strikeouts with K/9 with 8.7 (84 strikeouts in 87.1 IP). But Baldschun is right with him. Jack fanned 89 batters in his 113.2 innings of work for 7.0 per nine. The only other reliever on Philadelphia with a better K/9 in 1963 was John Boozer.

Boozer and Duren had an advantage over Baldschun, though. John started eight games and Duren seven. And though Duren was 6-2, he recorded eight saves, half of what Baldschun got, sixteen.
