Jack Was Saving The Phillies In 1963, Part 1

The Philadelphia Phillies had come a long way from their 47-win season of 1961. They climbed over .500 the next season and won 87 games in 1963. They wouldn't have been so good if not for their closer, Jack Baldschum.

Baldschum was part of a Philly bullpen that included ex-Dodoger Johhny Klippstein. Klippy went 5-6 with a 1.93 ERA. Ex-Yankee Ryan Duren was 6-2 with a 3.30 ERA. John Boozer was 3-4 with an ERA of 2.93. Dallas Green won seven games and posted an ERA of 3.23.

Klippstein saved eight, Duren and Green two each. Boozer, Jack Hamilton and Dennis Bennett (More a starter with a 9-5 record) each recorded one save. How about closer Baldschum?

Baldschum led the Phillies bullpen with eleven wins. Amazingly, this total not only led the club with eleven relief wins, but Jack was just two shy of the team-topping thirteen by Cal McLish.

He appeared in 65 games, and managed to complete 44 of them. Though Dallas Green pitched 120.0 innings, that included fourteen starts. Jack had 113.2 innings from the bullpen.
