Clark's Climb to the Bigs in 1927, Part 1

Watty Clark didn't look like he'd be a fit to Cleveland's or anyone else's bullpen. In 1924, he went only 1-3 for the Tribe, posting an ERA of 7.01 in twelve games. Eleven of them were out of the bullpen.

The next year, Watty was back in the minors. Would his 1924 season be his only one in the bigs? There were more troubles as he posted an ERA over nine with New Orleans of the Southern Association the next season. However, Clark found his groove as he pitched for for Terra Haute of the Illinois-Indiana-Iowa League. Watty's ERA was just 2.82. After posting nineteen wins and a 3.44 ERA the next season, Watty was ready for another shot at MLB.

In 1927, he was back in the the bigs and back in the bullpen as a member of the Brooklyn Robins. The Robins won only 68 games in '27, but it wasn't the pitchers' fault. Collectively, Brooklyn's hurlers posted a league-leading 3.36 earned run average that year.

Dazzy Vance was the team's best pitcher. But Dazzy could finish just 16-15 despite a great ERA of 2.70. And Vance wasn't the only starter with an ERA below three. Jesse Petty posted an excellent ERA of 2.98, but went only 13-18.

The bullpen of the Robins' might be seen as a weakness, but Rube Ehrhardt went 3-7 with a respectable ERA of 3.57. Guy Cantrell led all relievers with an earned run average of 2.70. However, Guy pitched just ten innings.

How about our guy?

Watty Clark appeared in just 27 games (Compared to Ehrhardt's 46), but finished nineteen of them. He was second, again to Ehrhardt's 95.2, in innings pitched on Brooklyn with 73.2. However, Watty topped all Robins' bullpen with seven wins against only two losses. Two of the wins were as a starter, though (Watty had three starts in '27).
