Berhard Was Building to Be a Starter in 1899, Part 2

Bill Bernhard, one of the early relievers in baseball, was one of the better pitchers on the 1899 Philadelpha Phillies. Though only a rookie, he pitched very well.

There is no record of Bill collecting a save, however Bernhard pitched so well, he started his first game on July the sixth. He beat Brooklyn 7-1 and seemed to be groomed to be a starter. He even got a shutout against the New York Giants in August. He wasn't an overpowering pitcher, averaging just 1.6 strikeouts per nine innings.

But Philadelphia kept Bernhard as the new century came. Though his ERA climbed over four, Bill was in the starting rotation for most of the season. All of five games to be exact. But collected two saves in those, adding fifteen wins to go along with them. Oddly enough, 1901 found Bernhard in the same city, but on a new team. The formation of the American League had him a Philadelphia Athletic. Bill won seventeen games. The next season, he was traded to the Cleveland Broncos, but ended up leading the junior circuit in winning percentage, .783 (18-5). Bill's finest season came in 1904, as he went 23-13 with a 2.13 earned run average. For good measure, Bernhard pitched four shutouts.

All told, Bill Berhard won 116 games at the big league level. He didn't exactly leave baseball after his major league career ended via a release in early 1908. Bill managed in the minors for several years. And his arm was still good enough that he pitched fourteen games with the Nashville Volunteers of the Southern Association in '08. And Bill didn't just pitch. He managed the team! He went 7-6 on the mound that season.

Bernhard continued to manage in the minors until 1917, and remarkable, continued to make the odd mound appearance here and there. In 1910, Bill won eight games for Nashville. The next season, he won four more for the Memphis Turtles. However, the team went only 62-71. Bill's final stop was the Salt Lake City Bees of the Pacific Coast League in '17. Remarkable, he won another two games in seven appearances. However, his ERA was 6.91. The 46-year old manager guided his team to a third place finish.
