Soriano Soared To New Heights In 2010, Part 1

Rafael Soriano was another pitcher who the instant he found himself in the bullpen, he found his calling!

With the Seattle Mariners in 2002, he pitched ten times, eight as a starter. The year ended with promise. Though 0-3 with a 4.47 ERA, it was obvious Rafael had some talent. He allowed 45 hits in 47.1 innings of work and walked only sixteen batters (3.0 per 9). But put in the bullpen the next year, Soriano was quite a pitcher.

He reversed his W-L record, 3-0. Rafael was used forty times, all as a reliever. In 53.0 innings pitched, the opposition got only 30 hits. Rafael fanned 60 batters. And his ERA was just 1.53.

However, just when it seemed like all was fine and good for Soriano, he struggled to make it to the mound in the bigs the next two seasons, making just thirteen appearances. Bouncing back in 2006, Soriano posted a 2.25 ERA in 53 appearances. He was on the move.

A new home in Atlanta saw him take the mound 71 times. But Rafael didn't become the closer until two seasons later. Though 1-6, he posted a career-high 27 saves in 2009 for the Braves. Once again, it time to find a new home. This time in Tampa Bay.

With the Rays in 2010, there was no doubt Soriano was the closer. Although just 3-2, the opposition couldn't hit him. Of the 64 appearances, Rafael finished 56 of them. Only Andy Sonnanstine pitched more innings out of the Tampa bullpen. However, Sonnanstine started four games. Opposing batters hit just .163 off Rafael.

The Rays ended up winning 96 games that year, the second most in franchise history. Soriano had made a huge difference. Tampa Bay made the postseason for just the second time, losing 3-2 in the American League Division Series to Texas.
