Joe Benz, but Doesn't Break In 1911, Part 2

I guess since Benz didn't actually record a save in 1911, that should make you think Joe shouldn't be on this list.

But what about his "Other" stats? The real stats!

Benz is not so much credited with even a hold in his 55 2/3 innings of work in '11. But there were reasons for Joe stay in the bigs until 1919. Benz's earned run average is excellent, 2.26. And amazingly enough, Joe would never have an ERA over 2.90 in his career.

Phillipe, on my list for 1910, had an ERA of 2.30. Perhaps most disappointingly, Joe Benz's Wins Above Replacement in just 0.7. He wasn't a strikeout artist, averaging just 4.5 K's per nine innings. But Benz's 1.168 WHIP is pretty good compared to the others on my list.

And Benz didn't fade away. He went on to a very solid major league career. He started 31 games in 1912, going just 13-17. But his ERA was that 2.90 I mentioned earlier. He went back to a dual role in '13, starting seventeen games and finishing a career-high ten. Benz even recorded his first save in a 7-10, 2.74 ERA year.

Benz's career continued with his earned run average getting lower and lower. Though 15-19 in 1914, Joe's ERA was 2.26. It was even better the next year, 2.03 and he went 9-5. Though only able to get into nineteen games in 1917, Joe was 7-3 with a 2.47 ERA. He appeared six times in relief. Joe Benz was also named to the postseason roster, although he failed to make an appearance in the World Series against the New York Giants. The Sox won it all in six games anyways. His old pal Shoeless Joe Jackson was now his teammate and hit .304 in the Fall Classic.

1918 ended up being Joe's last full season. He was 8-8 with a 2.63 ERA in 29 games (Seventeen starts, and five games finished). After a sole soles two-inning scoreless relief stint in 1919 with the Chicago White Sox, his time in the bigs was over.

Joe finished 77-75 with a 2.43 ERA. Only 32 pitchers have a better earned run average than Benz.
