So Cecil Ferguson was only used once as a starter in 1906 by the New York Giants. Despite pitching a shutout, his brilliant manager, John McGraw made Ferguson a "rescue pitcher," finishing games that New York's loaded rotation couldn't.
The result was Cecil Ferguson leading the National League in saves in '06 with seven. A modest total, for sure. But Fergie finished a league-leading nineteen games that year. And Fergie was going to be around next season with his 2.58 earned run average. Cecil fanned 32 batters in his 52.1 innings in 1906. But control was his problem. Ferguson walked 4.1 batters per nine. So his walks and hits per innings pitched is a sizable 1.280.
Though Ferguson was a respectable 3-2 in just fifteen appearances in 1907, his time in the bullpen appeared to be over. New York traded Cecil to Boston, and there he started 21 games in 1908. It was promising enough, as the pitcher finished the year 11-11 with 2.47 ERA. It was the third straight time Cecil's earned run average was less than two. It would be the last season he'd accomplish that. The Boston Doves weren't much of a team, winning just 45 games in 1909. Ferguson went 5-23. A rebound in 1910 saw Cecil post a 7-7 record with a 3.80 ERA. He finished ten games but had no saves in twelve relief outings. After going 1-3 with a 9.75 ERA with the Doves in 1911, Ferguson's major league career was over. After stops in Memphis and Venice, Cecil hung up his cleats and went into medical school. Despite that, Fergie continued to contribute to major league baseball. He used his medical knowledge to help pitchers such as Carl Hubbell and Bob Feller overcome various ailments.
