Bernhard Was Building up to Be a Starter in 1899, Part 1

So, even the nineteenth century had relievers who were effective. Bill Bernhard made his major league debut in 1899, and needless to say, he'd bee around for a while.

Bill had pitched primarily in the Buffalo area in the years leading up to his '99 MLB debut with the Philadelphia Phillies. Of note, Bernhard threw a no-hitter in 1897. When he got to the bigs two seasons later, it was as if he was ready.

Putting his terrific fastball to the test in Philly, Bill was both a starter and reliever. The Phillies won 94 games that season, and had three twenty-game winners. And Al Orth was on his way to 200 regular seasons wins by posting a record of 14-3 with a great 2.49 ERA and a National League-leading .824 winning percentage. So, it hard to crack the rotation that year. But Philadelphia wasn't about to let the rookie ride the bench.

A six-inning relief stint on April 24th was Billy's MLB debut. He'd realize, soon enough, what a privilege it was to be playing on a Phillies team that had both Big Ed Delahanty and Nap Lajoie.

But Bernhard pitched very well that season. He'd win six games, finish all nine of his relief appearances, and even start twelve contests. When the year was over, Bill had logged an impressive 132.1 innings, pretty good for a spot starter / reliever. Believe it or not, he allowed just 8.2 hits per nine innings, fewer than the four aces in the starting rotation!
