Clark's Climb to the Big Leagues, Part 2

So Watty Clark's second set of stats is most impressive? Yes and no. The lefty was in for a long career, however.

Saves? Clark had only two. But Watty's ERA was a very impressive 2.32. He wasn't overpowering, fanning just 32 batters in 73.2 innings. Clark allowed more than a hit per inning (Rounded off, it's 9.0, but Watty gave up 74 hits). Clark's WAR is 2.8.

However, Watty had arrived in the bigs, and soon would make the transition to the starting pitcher role. In 1927, was 12-9 with a 2.68 ERA and started nineteen games. He still saved three contests. Though his ERA climbed, he won 16, 13, 14 and 20 games in the seasons that followed.

But his knack for saving games didn't end. In 1930, although just 13-13 with a 4.19 ERA, he started 24 games but additionally, Watty finished fourteen more. And he collected a career-high seven saves. The Brooklyn Robins finished 86-66 thanks to Watty Clark's efforts.

However, Clark's career began to falter after his twenty-win season of 1932. The next season, Clark was just 5-8. In fact, Watty was traded to the cross-state New York Giants. Though added to the postseason despite a 4.75 ERA, Watty failed to pitch in the Fall Classic. New York beat Washington in five games, anyways.

His time in New York didn't last. Brooklyn purchased Watty in 1934, and were now sporting their famous "Dodgers" name. Clark was 3-2 with an earned run average over five. Amazingly, Watty rebounded to win thirteen games in 1935, even dropping his ERA to respectable 3.30. But Clark was an inconsistent 7-11 the next season, collecting his last two saves (He finished with seventeen in his career). After two more appearances in 1936, he was through for good in Brooklyn. The next season, he tried to catch on with the Boston Red Sox. After three impressive outings (1.50 ERA) with the Minneapolis Millers (AA), it wasn't going to be in the cards. The Millers had some amazing nineteen-year old kid named Ted Williams, who hit 43 home runs and batted .366 in 148 games.

After eight appearances (With an ERA of 7.29) with Reidsville of "D" ball in 1939, Watty was out of baseball.
