Fergie Was McGraw's Go-to Man In 1906, Part 1

The New York Giants were looking to repeat as world champions in 1906, but it didn't quite happen. Still, they won 96 games and finished second on the National League.

Their pitching staff, which had overwhelmed the Philadelphia Athletics in the previous year's World Series was back, and Christy Mathewson was back, and amazingly, his younger brother Henry appeared in two games on the hill. While Henry didn't make a contribution, Joe McGinnity (27-12), Hooks Wiltse (16-11), Dummy Taylor (17-19) and Red Ames (12-10, but with an excellent 2.66 ERA), held the hitters at bay. Old Matty won 22 games himself.

New York used Cecil Ferguson as their closer that year. Given how this was the dead ball era, you'd think he wasn't needed. Okay, maybe. But Cecil went out and finished ninety of his twenty-one relief appearances (Fergie started one game, and pitched a shutout). He went 1-0 as both a starter and reliever.
